Maintenance & Repairs

How often should my HGV and trailers be inspected?

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) recommends regular safety inspections to ensure roadworthiness. For HGVs, this is often every 6 weeks, and for trailers, typically every 12 weeks, though intervals can vary based on vehicle age, usage, and manufacturer recommendations. We can help you establish a suitable inspection schedule.

What does a typical HGV or trailer safety inspection involve?

Our safety inspections are comprehensive and follow DVSA guidelines. For HGVs, this typically includes checks of the cab interior and exterior, engine compartment, tyres, under/alongside vehicle components, brakes, lights, steering, and tachograph. For trailers, it covers checks of the under/alongside trailer, steering, tyres, brakes, markings, and lamps. We use digital inspection systems to provide detailed reports.

What kind of repairs do you undertake?

We handle a wide range of repairs, from routine wear and tear replacements (e.g., brakes, suspension, electrical components) to more complex fault diagnostics and rectifications. This includes engine issues, transmission problems, electrical faults, chassis repairs, and bodywork.

Do you use genuine or OEM parts for repairs?

We primarily use high-quality, reputable parts for all repairs. We can discuss options for genuine OEM parts or suitable aftermarket alternatives based on your preference and vehicle requirements.

How can I tell if my HGV or trailer needs a repair?

Common signs include warning lights on the dashboard, unusual noises (grinding, squealing, knocking), pulling to one side when braking or steering, reduced power, fluid leaks, visible damage, or excessive vibrations. If you notice any of these, it’s crucial to get the vehicle inspected promptly.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes, we can provide tailored maintenance contracts approved by the Office of the Traffic Commissioner. These agreements cover ongoing safety inspections and/or repairs to ensure your vehicles remain roadworthy and compliant.

Compliance Services

What are the key compliance requirements for HGV operators in the UK?

Key compliance requirements include:

Operator's Licence (O-Licence)

Required for commercial goods transport.

Vehicles must be safe and in good condition at all times, with records of inspections and maintenance kept for at least 15 months.

Strict regulations on driving hours, rest periods, and accurate tachograph recording.

Drivers must perform and record a daily walkaround check before using the vehicle.

Loads must be properly secured and within legal weight limits.

Commercial drivers must hold a valid Driver Certificate of Professional Competence.

Do you assist with MOT preparation for HGVs and trailers?

Yes, we provide thorough pre-MOT inspections and undertake any necessary repairs to ensure your HGV and trailers are fully prepared to pass their annual MOT test.

What is the importance of daily walkaround checks for drivers?

Daily walkaround checks are crucial for identifying any potential defects before the vehicle is used on the road. This proactive approach significantly reduces the risk of breakdowns, accidents, and DVSA prohibitions, ensuring continuous roadworthiness.

What happens if a vehicle is found to be non-compliant during a roadside check or audit?

Non-compliance can lead to severe penalties, including immediate prohibitions (vehicle taken off the road), fines, points on a driver’s licence, and potentially the suspension or revocation of an operator’s licence. Maintaining meticulous records and adhering to maintenance schedules is vital.
